The expanded facility will help cater to new projects as well as meet expected elevator demand in India. With this expanded facility, Otis is equipped to ‘Make In India’ and is well-positioned to meet the demand for sustainable building technologies in the country.The Gen2®system, which moves elevator innovation to a new level, is also produced in the factory.
About Gen2® Technology
Otis’ flagship products from the Gen2® range are geared towards efficiency while providing environmentally responsible features and benefits. Some of the key components of the Gen2 range are the coated steel belt, the ReGen™ drive, the permanent magnet machine and the PULSE™ system.All of these components working together increase the life, efficiency, safety and reliability of the elevator. Otis is the pioneer of this technology that is environmentally responsible and helps achieve substantial energy savings.
TheGen2® system incorporates ReGen™ drives to reduce energy consumption by up to 75 percent compared to conventional systems with non-regenerative drives. ReGen™ drives from Otis captures energy generated by the elevatorand feeds it back into the building’s grid where it can be used by other loads connected to the same network.
The Gen2® system replaces conventional steel ropes with smooth, polyurethane-coated steel belts, which are up to 20 percent lighter. Since the belts are highly flexible, they have a much smaller bending radius, enabling Otis to incorporate a compact machine that is up to 70 percent smaller than a conventional machine.
In addition, the Gen2 system delivers outstanding reliability. Its long-lasting coated steel belts, smooth crowned sheaves and reduction of moving parts in the machine dramatically reduces wear, increases durability and considerably minimizes operational noise. The PULSE system monitors the health of the belt cords 24hours per day, sevendays aweek.
Otis has sold over 260,000 Gen2® elevators worldwide since its launch. The reason for this tremendous success is that developers and building owners alike recognize the value of sustainable buildings and are aiming for green certifications like Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED). Gen2 Infinity: The expanded factory’s latest product offering is the new Gen2 Infinity elevator. Designed to meet the needs of the Indian market, the passenger elevator operates at a speed of 1.75 meters per second and features a compact machine room ideal for mid-rise residential buildings up to 30 floors. Built on Otis’ flagship Gen2 technology platform, this latest offering expands the localized Gen2 elevator range beyond its current applications in the residential sector.
Gen2® Switch:The Gen2® Switch is an easy to install, single-phase battery operated, elevator system that will be a boon to parts of India that suffer from frequent blackouts. Under normal running mode, the single-phase power supply charges a pack of batteries, which in turn supplies power to the elevator motor. In the event of a power failure, the battery pack continues to operate the elevator for up to 100 trips, eliminating the inconveniences of a power outage.It uses a 230 volt single-phase power supply instead of a conventional three-phase 400 volt power supply, thus making it a “Plug & Go” system. Its environmentally sustainable design coupled with its compatibility with alternative energy sources like solar panels makes it truly sustainable. This is the latest and biggest innovation from the Gen2 range that is geared towards efficiency whilst providing energy-efficient features and benefits.
Some of the Indian projects using Gen2 technology
- Kohinoor Square – Otis will install 49 elevators including six Gen2® elevators and 10 escalators in this state-of-the-art office. We will be installing our high-speed gearless elevators with a speed of 6 mps in this tallest commercial tower.
Kohinoor Hospital – Kurla-Vidyavihar, a central suburb of Mumbai: The first LEED Platinum hospital in Asia and the second in the world. Otis has provided elevators, including Gen2® elevators and escalators to this state-of-the art150-bed specialty hospital.
