‘Seeds of Hope’ for a Greener tomorrow
A unique innovative green initiative for the students of NMMC primary school, Chinchpada
With a vision to promote sustainability, K Raheja Corp, India’s leading real estate conglomerate, organized the ‘Seeds of Hope’ activity at their commercial IT Park Mindspace, Airoli. On a promise of a greener tomorrow, the students of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Primary School (NMMC), Chinchpada, were educated on the benefits of an ecological and healthier environment. The children and teachers were shown instructional videos on the importance and simplified methods to make seed balls.
Seed Balls also known as ‘earth balls’ are clay dumplings used for proliferating plants from seeds without opening up soil. This is an ancient technique used to grow vegetation without the use of farming equipment.
A team of dedicated Mindspace, Airoli volunteers distributed Sitaphals (Custard Apple) among the children, which they excitedly consumed and then collected the seeds. Each Sitaphal that contains no less than 50 seeds were cleaned and then again distributed along with Neem, Teak and Amaltas seeds. The children then inserted the individual seed in the clay dumplings made of organic substances like mud and compost, under the supervision of experts. Approximately 10,000 seed balls were formed and collected by the organizers, which they will be keeping for a period of 2 to 3 days till the dumplings dry up and harden. The final seed balls will be distributed to the children, which they can plant in various places and share some with their friends, to spread greenery and the ‘Seeds of Hope.’
