thyssenkrupp introduces MAS (Maintenance Assistance Systems) a digital solutions for customers
Indranil Roy, Director - Mining, thyssenkrupp Industries India
What, according to you, are the factors driving demand for construction machinery in our country?
The coal mining sector is presented with many favourable announcements by the Government of India such as the auction of 41 coal blocks. Allowing private sector in commercial coal mining will certainly broaden business prospects in the sector and will propel India to step into the global league. Such announcements bring in positive sentiments for the construction machinery sector and with this, we expect sustained demand for the construction equipment such as material handling equipment, crushing – screening equipment and coal extraction equipment (plough feeders) in the coal mining sector. Besides, I strongly believe that the iron ore mining sector as well needs a big push to be back on track.
How do you view the challenges ahead of this industry? What are your ways to look beyond these challenges and move past it?
The major challenge that the coal industry is facing at present is the cash flow. Although major investments are planned in the coal mining sector, the payment terms being offered by the government and the public sector companies are very complex. Besides, the equipment manufacturers or project implementers in the industry require significant working capital finance support who are significantly affected during COVID-19 Pandemic. On this backdrop, in order to improve the sector sentiments, we would like to request the government and public sector companies to review the commercial and payment terms with the provision of adequate advance to ensure that the equipment suppliers and project implementers have a positive cash flow throughout the project implementation phase. This will also help the government and public sector companies in getting their projects implemented faster.
With the rise in technological development, what will be the future of construction equipment in India, in your opinion?
In India, we aim to generate adequate employment opportunities and improve the living standards of the masses. Hence, instead of man-less operations, our focus in India is to use technological development – digitalisation – AI to improve the safety of operations, increase run-time, ensure planned maintenance and order of spare parts on time, etc. With technological advancements, we are focusing on providing a better customer experience with services such as digital dashboards, energy optimisation, on-time intimations for ordering spare parts, identifying potential operating risks through sensors and ensuring that the operators are made aware of these immediately to prevent accidents / collisions, etc.
What are the changes in this sector in the past few years? Are there any new changes that your brand has implemented?
We have introduced a number of digital solutions for our customers such as MAS (Maintenance Assistance Systems) etc. Also, we are planning to introduce digital dashboards to help operators / supervisors to increase safety, operational efficiency and, reduce downtime.
As the Government of India has increased its fund allocations towards road constructions as part of infrastructure development, what are your views on the industry growth of road construction machinery in the long run?
We are a major supplier of aggregate crushing and screening plants. The major implementation of aggregates is in the construction of roads, buildings and industrial plants. In the future, we are expecting significant growth for the aggregate crushing systems in the road construction sector. However, the building and industrial plant construction sector is facing many challenges. Given the current industry scenario, we are not expecting a significant change in the market conditions for at least next three years unless the government undertakes structural reforms to boost the industrial and building sector.
