Renny Strips’ green manufacturing practices gain relevance amid changing international steel trade norms

The 22 MW solar power plant along with the company’s manufacturing operations support its sustainability endeavours.

With changing trends in carbon reporting standards in international steel trade, environmental performance of steel manufacturers has come under the scanner. Renny Strips Ltd, a leader in building materials industry has made use of renewable energy, steel recycling and optimisation of processes. The company reports that its carbon emissions are around 40% lower than the conventional industry average, demonstrating its stated efforts to reduce the environmental impact of steel production.

Renny Strips operates a 22 MW captive solar power plant that supplies about 30% of its energy requirements. The company also uses scrap-based induction furnaces and focuses on process optimisation and AI-driven emissions monitoring. This is among the means through which it manages its energy consumption and carbon footprint. This strategy complements the company’s integration of its production process, whereby various stages of production are carried out within its own facilities. Renny has received a 5-Star Green Steel Rating from the Government of India.

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) of the European Union (EU) has made reporting of emissions more significant for companies dealing in iron and steel products that fall under the scope of this policy. Reporting of emissions and compliance with related financial obligations are necessary for the concerned importers under CBAM.

For Indian manufacturing companies that export their products to such markets, emissions data is gaining significance in fulfilling customer requirements and meeting regulatory obligations. The carbon footprint of a product can affect the cost of importing it under CBAM.  Against this backdrop, commenting on the relevance of Renny Strips’ existing sustainability efforts, Mr. Binny Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, Renny Strips Ltd. said, “Sustainability has been an important part of our manufacturing approach. Our investments in solar power, along with our focus on resource efficiency and integrated production, underline our efforts to manage energy use and improve operational efficiency. As carbon reporting receives greater attention in international markets, we remain committed to responsible manufacturing while maintaining our focus on product quality and customer requirements.”

Renny Strips manufactures scaffolding and formwork systems, ERW pipes and tubes, narrow-width hot-rolled coils and wire rods. Its scaffolding and formwork division offers more than 1,000 stock-keeping units, including systems, panels, shoring solutions and accessories used in construction and infrastructure projects. The portfolio serves a range of applications, from structural support at construction sites to industrial and infrastructure requirements.

The company’s manufacturing process covers steel melting, billet casting and rolling, alongside the production of pipes, tubes and engineered scaffolding and formwork components. Its integrated setup allows several stages of production to be managed within its own facilities. This helps promote coordination between production and quality assurance, allowing the company to oversee its production process.

Renny Strips has three induction furnaces with a total capacity of 199,200 tonnes per year. The company’s manufacturing facilities also use technologies, including CNC machining and robotic welding, which are in particular used for the production of steel parts. These technologies enable the company to manufacture products of high quality and consistency across its wide product range.

The company’s emphasis on sustainability goes beyond its investments in solar energy to how it handles materials and production. Steel recycling, process optimisation and emissions monitoring form part of this approach, while integrated manufacturing allows the company to oversee multiple stages of production. As emissions disclosure requirements evolve in international markets, these existing practices are relevant to the company’s efforts to monitor its environmental performance and respond to the requirements applicable to its export markets.

Renny Strips continues to deliver steel products and solutions to its customers in India and international markets. The manufacturing plants of the company, its investments in renewable energy and emphasis on resource efficiency continue to be key factors for the company even as sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reporting gain prominence in the steel industry.
